Acronyms
An acronym is
a word or name formed from the initial components of a longer name or
phrase, usually using individual initial letters, as in N.A.T.O. (North
Atlantic Treaty Organization) or E.U. (European Union), but sometimes
using syllables, as in BENELUX (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg),
or a mixture of the two, as in RADAR (Radio Detection And Ranging).
Similarly, acronyms are sometimes pronounced as words, as in NASA or UNICEF,
sometimes as the individual letters, as in FBI or ATM, or a
mixture of the two, as in JPEG.
Examples: - JPEG- Joint Photographic Experts Group.
SCUBA-Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.
Extended Acronyms
Another
form of Acronym is when a sentence as created from the first letter of each word,
so that we remember the certain things.
For
example: - VIBGYOR. Use for remembering
the seven colours of Rainbow, i.e., Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange
and Red.

Mnemonics
Here
we will have to remember that Mnemonics is different form acronyms and
abbreviation. Abbreviations and acronyms are
shortened forms of words or phrases. An abbreviation is
typically a shortened form of words used to represent the whole (such as Dr. or
Prof.) while an acronym contains a set of initial letters from
a phrase that usually form another word (such as radar or scuba).
A mnemonic is
(often) a phrase you use to remember something else with the same first
letters, such as "Henry He Likes Beer But Cup Not Over Flowing Nearly"
for the symbols in the top line of the periodic table (hydrogen, helium,
lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon).
